Metal Roofing: The Future of Environmentally-Conscious Roofing – Oldies 97.7 FM

As the arms race to become more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly reaches fever pitch, metal roofing systems are becoming more and more popular for those seeking greener building materials. However, there is some skepticism and doubt regarding whether or not metal roofing systems are actually worth the hassle, especially considering their steep cost upfront when compared to asphalt or shingle roofs. Orlando-based roofer TC Metal Roofing explains the technology behind metal roofing, why its better for the environment, and for your wallet.

“Metal roofing is energy efficient because of the finish you put on it,” says TC Metal Roofing owner TJ Kaltenbach, “it re-emits heat instead of holding it in, so it takes less energy to keep the home cool.” Even without any finish, Kaltenbach adds, a basic and unpainted metal roof will still reflect solar energy rather than absorb it. This high efficiency in solar reflectance makes metal the ideal roofing material for a net-zero energy home.

The most optimal type of metal roofing for energy efficiency is referred to as cool-metal roofing. In cool-metal roofing, a highly reflective coating is added to the surface of the roof that increases the reflectance of solar energy and decreases the roof’s surface temperature. This reduces the energy requirements for air-conditioned homes and makes unconditioned buildings more comfortable. Most cool-metal roofing systems are Energy Star certified and are particularly effective for homes and businesses in warmer climates.

This is not to mention the fact that metal roofing systems can easily last two or even three times longer than shingle roofs, are recyclable at the end of their useful life, and are usually made from at least 25% recycled and clean materials in the first place. Many other roofing materials are known to contain materials harmful to human health and to the environment, including arsenic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and are not recyclable at all.

On top of these other environmental benefits, metal roofing systems are particularly solar panel friendly. Solar panels can be easily installed even on existing metal roofs, sometimes with attachments that do not even penetrate the roof. In addition, because it is necessary to remove solar panels when replacing a roof, a metal roof that only needs to be replaced every 40-70 years is ideal. It is common, in fact, for a metal roof to outlive a solar panel.

“Metal roofing pays for itself,” Kaltenbach concludes. “It may be more expensive up front, but the money it saves you, in the long run, more than makes up for it. Your neighbors with asphalt and shingle roofs will be replacing them in 15 or 20 years. Your metal roof won’t need to be replaced for double that, and it’ll save you money on heating and cooling every month.”
