Keeping kids in school something LISD prioritizes even contacting drop-outs to bring them back. The “Expectation Graduation” program sends volunteers to meet with people who haven’t finished high school to bring them back. They also offer help for anyone who needs it to complete their requirements.
Miguel Garza had to drop out of school when he found out he was going to be a father. He worked for about a year and now is going back to graduate with a diploma. He said it’s for his daughter.
“I just want her to have a better life than I did,” he said. You know, because they tried to give me as much as they could, and my biological parents weren’t really there — they were in prison — I mean, they’ve had me since I was six months, they didn’t have to take me in. It gives me the mindset of if they can take care of someone else’s kid, I can do even better for her.”
Garza is expected to graduate in December.
