As hemp extract found its medical relevance lately after the state and federal permission, it has now extended to veterinary patients getting more research attention and funding. While the holistic vets and many pet owners started advocating and using hemp oil for dogs and cats to treat a variety of ailments, the word has spread to the masses leading to more clinical studies on this.
As Joey from Mr. Four Paw says “The response from our customers has been nothing short of spectacular. No bullying between dogs, no separation anxiety, no more freaking out seeing new visitors, or at the sound of lightening – all this feedback has helped us refine our product to be more effective.”
An anonymous online survey piloted by faculty at Colorado State University was given to pet owners who buy products from an online hemp company. Total responses were 632, of which 58.8% indicated they currently use a hemp product for their dog. Most dog owners (77.6%) indicated they use the product for an illness or condition diagnosed by a veterinarian, with the most common conditions including seizures, cancer, anxiety, and arthritis. Fewer participants indicated they currently use hemp products for their cat (11.93%), with 81.8% indicating they use the product for a veterinarian-diagnosed illness or condition, most commonly cancer, anxiety, and arthritis.
The reported benefits ranged from moderate to very helpful for pet owners in the areas of relief from pain (reported by 64.3%), helping with sleep (reported by 50.5%) and relieving anxiety( reported by 49.3%). For cats, around 66% reported help with relief from pain, 56.3% reported a reduction of inflammation, and 44% reported help with sleep.
While the overwhelming majority reported using successfully hemp oil for dogs pain relief, only 7% felt the hemp oil did not work as well as other forms of treatment. The decision to use hemp oil products stemmed from it being a natural product, working as an adjunct to other therapies, and being affordable.
The hemp oil is obtained by cold-pressing the seeds of the hemp plant. This method of extraction is similar to how olive and coconut oil are obtained. While the doses may vary depending on the weight of the pet, the pet owners start with small doses and see how the pet responds. So dose size remains highly individualized.
Joey says “Two of the possible side effects reported by very few users are sedation and over-active appetite. But pet owners can easily note how their pets behave with individualized doses and finalize the required dose accordingly. We have released hemp oil for dogs 250 mg which can often last for more than a month when used for a dog weighing under 50lbs”
